ESMT Berlin and the Yale School of Management (Yale SOM) offer a double master’s degree allowing students to acquire two degrees: a Master in Management (MIM) from ESMT and a Management Studies in Global Business and Society (MMS GBS) from Yale SOM in just two years. This provides students with the opportunity to add a new dimension to their global business education. Those who qualify for the program spend their first year studying at ESMT and the second at Yale SOM, before submitting a thesis at ESMT.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andrew Zhang\u00a0recently graduated from\u00a0the MIM program.\u00a0Prior to\u00a0enrolling\u00a0at ESMT,\u00a0Andrew\u00a0graduated from the University of Toronto with double majors in\u00a0economics and\u00a0East Asian\u00a0studies and a minor in\u00a0business German.\u00a0A\u00a0few months into\u00a0the MIM program at ESMT, he\u00a0applied for the\u00a0double-degree program with Yale SOM, and after spending\u00a0his\u00a0first year at ESMT,\u00a0he\u00a0headed to Yale.\u00a0We caught\u00a0up with\u00a0him\u00a0to gain an insight into this experience of the double degree program.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You have studied in Canada, Germany, and the United States. Did you notice any similarities or differences studying in these three countries?<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both the University of Toronto and ESMT are located at the heart of very international and vibrant cities, while Yale is situated in a relatively quieter area. All three schools have very diverse cohorts of students. Our ESMT cohort consisted of 112 students from almost 40 different countries. All three schools are well-established institutions, and I enjoyed my time at all of them. Classes at ESMT are small but highly interactive. If you enjoy interacting with people from different cultures and getting the most out of a fast-paced campus life with an immersive corporate internship experience, then ESMT is just the place for you! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why did you choose the ESMT MIM program?<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having\u00a0lived and studied\u00a0in Canada\u00a0for quite some time,\u00a0it would have made\u00a0sense for me\u00a0to\u00a0continue studying\u00a0in Canada\u00a0or the U.S., to stay in my comfort zone.\u00a0However, I\u00a0wanted to\u00a0explore\u00a0other areas\u00a0of the world\u00a0by choosing to study in Germany.\u00a0I have always been interested in German culture and hoped\u00a0to\u00a0get to know the country better\u00a0by living, studying,\u00a0and working\u00a0there.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another reason that I chose ESMT was the school\u2019s strong founders\u2019 background. I believed that the close link between the school and the business world could provide me with greater opportunities and possibilities for future internships and employment. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to work as an intern at Allianz SE in the area of business transformation from April to August last year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, the entire ESMT program is very well designed, starting with courses that lay a solid business foundation, followed by an internship module. After completing the internship, we returned to school and resumed our study with courses according to our specialization, and finally, we had the opportunity to put together everything we learned over two years in a thesis topic of our choice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What have you learned during your time at ESMT? What were the challenges and difficulties you encountered and how did you deal with them?<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most rewarding experience\u00a0is that I\u00a0gained a very comprehensive and\u00a0solid\u00a0knowledge\u00a0of business. Moreover, the\u00a0five-month internship at Allianz was an immersive experience in\u00a0the business world: on\u00a0the\u00a0one hand, I was able to find and plug gaps\u00a0between\u00a0theories\u00a0and the\u00a0practical business\u00a0world,\u00a0and on the other hand, I gained a new understanding of\u00a0what\u00a0life\u00a0in the workplace\u00a0looks\u00a0like. Another important\u00a0experience was\u00a0meeting students from all over the world, some of whom have become\u00a0very good\u00a0friends of mine,\u00a0we\u00a0still\u00a0kept\u00a0in touch\u00a0even after I left Berlin in my second year to study at Yale.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking of challenges,\u00a0the\u00a0fast-paced\u00a0curriculum would be\u00a0the\u00a0main one.\u00a0During my\u00a0undergraduate\u00a0years, a course\u00a0would\u00a0usually take about\u00a0four\u00a0months, but at ESMT, I had to finish\u00a0one\u00a0in\u00a0three\u00a0or\u00a0four\u00a0weeks.\u00a0In this kind of intense learning\u00a0environment, one needs to take each class seriously.\u00a0Although\u00a0going through\u00a0many\u00a0case\u00a0studies\u00a0was often\u00a0tiring,\u00a0making notes\u00a0along the way\u00a0might be the\u00a0only way to\u00a0actively\u00a0participate\u00a0in\u00a0class\u00a0discussions and complete group\u00a0projects.\u00a0It is important to take full advantage of the diverse resources\u00a0offered by\u00a0the school to constantly broaden your way of thinking.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why did you decide to apply for the ESMT-Yale SOM Double Degree program?<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Yale program in the\u00a0second year\u00a0appealed\u00a0to me for three main reasons.\u00a0First\u00a0of all, the\u00a0program offers a\u00a0highly flexible\u00a0timetable: only\u00a0two\u00a0out\u00a0of\u00a0about\u00a018 courses are\u00a0compulsory,\u00a0with the\u00a0rest\u00a0being\u00a0electives that\u00a0we\u00a0could\u00a0choose based on\u00a0our\u00a0interests or career\u00a0objectives. The large pool of electives\u00a0even included\u00a0non-management courses.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Secondly, the program brings a precious opportunity to meet with students from different business schools across the globe, which certainly helps with building a strong global network. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last but not least, the double-degree program would not take additional time. My initial goal was to obtain one Master\u2019s degree from ESMT Berlin in two years, and it was a pleasant surprise to complete two in just two years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the application process of the Double Degree program? Any tips you want to share?<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

An applicant needs a CV, undergraduate and ESMT transcripts, and a letter of recommendation. GMAT or GRE scores are not required, but good scores can help for sure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The application process is fairly simple: submit your application on the Yale website, attend a video interview after your information has been reviewed, and then wait for the school to notify you of the decision. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I would say that strong grades, especially those at the graduate level, and active involvement in extracurricular activities are two important factors shared by many of my peers.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What kind of help do ESMT Berlin and Yale provide in career development? And what advice do you have?<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both schools offer\u00a0wonderful\u00a0career\u00a0support. I was particularly impressed by ESMT\u2019s workshops\u00a0right after the start of the school year,\u00a0including\u00a0resume\u00a0and cover letter writing, interview\u00a0tips, and more.\u00a0Furthermore,\u00a0at\u00a0ESMT\u00a0we could always sit down with our career service counselors\u00a0to\u00a0discuss personalized\u00a0questions\u00a0on\u00a0career development. Yale offers similar\u00a0support.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, both schools have exclusive job postings. That was also the case during our internship hunt, many of my peers secured their internship via ESMT\u2019s network. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To conclude, I would like to stress that whether going to Yale or staying at ESMT for the second year, each decision brings its own opportunities. I have discussed many advantages of choosing the double-degree program, but studying at ESMT while doing an internship can also help you with accumulating career experience, something that studying in the U.S. cannot provide. In any case, I think choosing ESMT was, is, and will always be the right school to choose! <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
